Grantham 1st XI travelled to Skegness for their first league fixture of the season and, following on from last week’s success, captain Rohan Nurse had no hesitation in electing to bat when the coin came down in his favour. Things didn’t start well for the away team though and Stewart Mudie was dismissed in the first over of the day. Wickets fell regularly from that point, until Josh Mihill (27) and Jamie Brumby (40) combined for a partnership just shy of 50. Tidy seam bowling was the order of the day from Skegness with the pick of the bowlers, Umar Farooq (12-3-31-4) providing control to the home side. An eventual target of 180 was about par for the day and Grantham were optimistic going in to tea.
Grantham’s bowling efforts started well with twice-retired Simon Oakes (13-2-29-2) bowling tight lines and piling the pressure on Skegness’ opening batsman. The old cliché “one brings two” was never truer with 8-1 quickly turning in to 21-4. Wymanga Perera (35) and Brendan Young (50) combined to take the wind out of Grantham’s sails but, when Neil Stevenson claimed his first wicket of the season, momentum shifted to Grantham once again. In the end, despite Joe Peck’s mammoth efforts (17-3-35-3), Grantham couldn’t secure the final wicket and those all-important bonus points.
However, this was a positive and encouraging start for the league newcomers who travel to Grimsby next weekend.
