1st XI Match Report – 18th April 2015

Grantham 1st XI travelled to Skegness for their first league fixture of the season and, following on from last week’s success, captain Rohan Nurse had no hesitation in electing to bat when the coin came down in his favour.  Things didn’t start well for the away team though and Stewart Mudie was dismissed in the first over of the day.  Wickets fell regularly from that point, until Josh Mihill (27) and Jamie Brumby (40) combined for a partnership just shy of 50.  Tidy seam bowling was the order of the day from Skegness with the pick of the bowlers, Umar Farooq (12-3-31-4) providing control to the home side.  An eventual target of 180 was about par for the day and Grantham were optimistic going in to tea.

Grantham’s bowling efforts started well with twice-retired Simon Oakes (13-2-29-2) bowling tight lines and piling the pressure on Skegness’ opening batsman.  The old cliché “one brings two” was never truer with 8-1 quickly turning in to 21-4. Wymanga Perera (35) and Brendan Young (50) combined to take the wind out of Grantham’s sails but, when Neil Stevenson claimed his first wicket of the season, momentum shifted to Grantham once again.  In the end, despite Joe Peck’s mammoth efforts (17-3-35-3), Grantham couldn’t secure the final wicket and those all-important bonus points.

However, this was a positive and encouraging start for the league newcomers who travel to Grimsby next weekend.

1st XI Match Report – 11th April 2015

Grantham 1st XI made a great start to the season with a comprehensive victory over Belvoir CC in the sides one and only pre-season friendly.  After losing the toss on a typically green April wicket, Grantham were put in to bat.  The opening pair of last year’s leading run scorer, Stewart Mudie (47*) and new recruit Dan Webb (75*) knew they would have to work hard to get value out of the tricky wicket and slow outfield.  However, some hard graft and patience took the 1st wicket stand just shy of 150 before both batsman were retired to make way for the middle order to get some valuable match practice.  Newly appointed captain, Rohan Nurse (10)  accompanied another Grantham debutant, Karanjit Bansal (28), to pick up where the opening pair left off but runs were harder to come by as Belvoir’s Joe Bottomley (9-1-46-2) had started to find his stride.  Run-a-ball 34 from David Whapplington and 23 from Gareth Bennett wrapped up the innings and Grantham posted an impressive total of 253 from their 45 overs.

It was a shaky start from Grantham with the ball however, and after 4 overs Belvoir had already amassed 43 runs.  But, as the cobwebs were blown off, the opening bowlers started to wrestle back control of the game and the top four batsman were dismissed by the time the scoreboard passed 60.  Joe Peck (7-1-28-3) started the ball rolling with the third new signing for the year, Jamie Brumby (5-1-28-1) at the other end, and the remaining 6 batsman offered little resistance against Danny Ashley (5-2-6-2) and Neil Stevenson (4.1-0-8-3) who secured the victory by a conclusive 176 runs.

The hard work has only just begun for Grantham 1st XI as they begin their league campaign away to Skegness this Saturday.  The 3rd XI also begin their league season at Gorse Lane on Saturday with the 2nd and 4th teams starting the following week.
